Who is Hello Kitty?

Since her birth in 1974, Hello Kitty has become:

  1. a princess of purity to toddlers
  2. a cuddly playmate for young girls
  3. a walk down memory lane for adults, (especially young women) yearning for another taste of childhood

Don’t let her simple lines and minimal facial features deceive you, Hello Kitty is not just another cutie-pie. Hello Kitty fascinates and somehow hovers most visibly above the barrage of ideas, fads, buzz and motifs that drive and shape Japanese popular culture.

Hello Kitty is a cartoon character so simple in design—a round head, button nose, a red ribbon and no mouth—who has achieved cult status internationally as a fashion icon. There is something so post-modern about Hello Kitty. Mimmy, her sister, and Hello Kitty and appear with mouths in videos, but have no mouths on store shelves.

Hello Kitty was born on November 1, 1974, and she lives in London, England with her parents and her twin sister, Mimmy. They have lots of friends at school with whom they share many adventures. Her hobbies include traveling, music, reading, eating yummy cookies baked by Mimmy, and best of all
making new friends. As Hello Kitty always says, you can never have too many friends.

Hello Kitty’s generosity and kindness endear her to everyone she meets.

Hello Kitty weighs the same as 3 apples. Interestingly enough, she loves collecting things like jewelry, fish, and candy.

Hello Kitty has starred in several TV shows, including Hello Kitty’s Furry Tale Theatre

Hello Kitty’s Furry Tale Theatre (1986), Hello Kitty and Friends (1991), Hello Kitty’s Paradise (1993-94) and Hello Kitty’s Stump Village (2005). Hello Kitty’s video games include everything from Hello Kitty’s Big Fun Piano, Mainichi Suteki! Hello Kitty No Life Kit.

So, Hello Kitty truly is a cultural institution and has been adopted into the hearts of young children and strange adults all over the world. She has come to mean a lot of different things to different people, and has even recently been adopted into the gothic community for some reason and is sometimes seen wearing gothic Lolita outfits. After all, nothing says ‘badass’ like a kitty in a pink and black petticoat.
